Friday Five #5: Luddism, Creativity and Capitalism, Apple's Design Process, and 50/50 Bets on Big Decisions.
Every Friday, I share five links worth clicking. Enjoy.
Happy Friday!
I’ve been distracted these last few weeks on the awful task of closing down my studio (awww) and haven’t been writing here.
I will no doubt write a bit about lessons learned as an indie founder, but for now here’s five things worth your time 👇
1.
I really enjoy Tara’s Substack What Works and her writing on our relationship with work and how it’s changing.
In this post, Tara explores Luddism not as a label for those stuck in the past, but “an opportunity to notice how technology changes how we work—as individuals and as a society—and refuse to allow that change to produce more work.”
2.
I’ve ordered but not started reading Samuel Franklin’s new book, Cult of Creativity, which I bought entirely based on this New Yorker review.
Franklin writes about our current obsession with creativity and how it's become a trendy commodity.
He raises the question of whether the constant pressure to be innovative is a desire to create something and be expressive, or an economic imperative resulting in a shallow, market-driven culture.
3.
I usually avoid Steve Job adorations like the plague, but this Twitter thread from @FelixLee is quite good.
4.
“We’ve discovered the secret of immortality.
The bad news is it’s not for us”
Guardian interview with Geoffrey Hinton—one of the ‘Godfathers’ of AI
5.
Annie Duke, former professional poker player and author of Quit, talks about the research behind the power of a simple coin flip for getting unstuck when making life-changing decisions.
Have a great weekend!
